On December 26th 2004, Tsunami hit the village of Peraliya near Hikkaduwa, bringing death to thousands of people, including the tragic death of hundreds of people who were traveling in the train “Samudra Devi” (Queen of the Ocean). After 2 years, as a sign of rising back from the disaster, this gigantic Buddha statue was built in the exact same location of the tragic train accident. The statue was calved, reproduction of the famous Bhamian Statues in Afghanistan, which were destroyed by the Talaiban regime.

I took this photo, on my way to Colombo, after spending a week in Matara.
